PROJECT SUMMARY

NATURESCAPES (NATURE-based solutions for climate resilient, nature positive and socially just communities in diverse landSCAPES) is a Horizon Europe project exploring how nature-based solutions (NBS) interact and generate impacts across entire landscapes. While many NBS initiatives are implemented as individual projects, their combined effects on climate resilience, biodiversity, and social equity remain poorly understood.

Working across 30 Functional Urban Areas (FUAs), including 12 in-depth case study regions in Europe and beyond, the project investigates the synergies and trade-offs that emerge when NBS are implemented at scale. By combining environmental, social, governance, and spatial perspectives, NATURESCAPES develops new knowledge, tools, and evidence to support climate-resilient, nature-positive, and socially just landscape transitions.

PHYSI’S ROLE

PHYSI contributes to the project via the integration of NATURESCAPES case studies into the Urban Nature Atlas (UNA). Building on its expertise in NBS data management and digital knowledge infrastructures, PHYSI adapts the platform to incorporate NATURESCAPES-specific indicators and makes project results accessible through the Atlas.

PHYSI supports the collection, quality assurance, publication, and querying of approximately 390 NBS cases from 30 FUAs, while also providing the hosting and maintenance of the Atlas infrastructure. Through the UNA, PHYSI helps translate project findings into practical resources for researchers, planners, municipalities, and decision-makers.

PARTNERSHIP

A consortium of research institutes, universities, municipalities, and innovation partners across Europe, Latin America, and North America.
